Manchester to Kerala by Car: A Road Trip With a Purpose

Posted by

In an inspiring display of courage, community, and compassion, four friends—Sabu Chacko, Shoy Cherian, Reji Thomas, and Biju P. Mani—have embarked on an extraordinary overland journey from Manchester, UK to Kerala, India, crossing 20 countries in 60 days. And in an even more remarkable twist, they will be driving back the same way, completing an epic round-trip across continents.

This isn’t just a road trip. It’s a mission driven by a purpose: to raise vital funds for The Christie Hospital Charity, a leading cancer research and treatment center that goes beyond NHS provisions to offer enhanced care and support for patients and their families.

An Unprecedented Route
Their carefully mapped journey will wind through: France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Nepal, and finally, India—a cultural and geographical expedition that blends adventure with advocacy.

As they traverse cities, mountains, and borders, their goal remains clear: to shine a spotlight on a cause that touches countless lives and to invite global citizens to join hands in support.

Supporting The Christie Hospital Charity

At the heart of this initiative is The Christie Charity, based in Manchester. As one of Europe’s largest cancer centers, The Christie provides world-class treatment, pioneering research, and compassionate support—much of which is made possible through public donations.

The funds raised by this road trip will contribute to services and innovations that make a real difference for cancer patients, from advanced therapies to emotional and psychological support.

A Historic Send-Off
The journey was officially launched on Monday, 14th April, in a spirited flag-off ceremony held in Manchester—significantly timed to coincide with Vishu, the South Indian New Year, and the Holy Week, adding deeper meaning to the start of this noble venture.

The event was graced by Mrs. Vishakha Yaduvanshi, the newly appointed Consul General of India in Manchester, who inaugurated the expedition with her first official address. Offering her full support, she highlighted the symbolic importance of the journey and the role of the Indian diaspora in philanthropic efforts abroad.

Also present were:

Mr. Aby Sebastian – President of the Union of UK Malayalee Associations (UUKMA)

Mr. Sumesh Rajan – President of the Manchester Malayalee Cultural Association (MMCA)

Ms. Kent Jennifer – Community Fundraising Officer at The Christie Charity

The event was generously hosted by Moss Nook Indian Restaurant, which provided a warm atmosphere and refreshments, attended by friends, families, and supporters who came together in solidarity.

A Community Comes Together
This initiative has become a beacon of unity for the Malayalee and wider Indian communities across the UK. Leaders such as Alex Varghese, Sheejo Varghese, Shaji Thomas Varakudi, and Janish Kuruvilla joined the flag-off, standing shoulder-to-shoulder in support of the cause.

UUKMA President Aby Sebastian commented, “This journey represents resilience, gratitude, and the incredible strength of community. We are proud to support such a meaningful cause.”

While the expedition itself is a huge undertaking, the mission goes far beyond the road. It is a call to action—a reminder that small contributions, collective efforts, and bold acts of kindness can change lives.

The Christie Charity relies on the generosity of the public to continue expanding and enhancing its services. With ambitious goals for the future, every donation helps pave the way for better treatments and brighter tomorrows.

This road trip serves as both a symbol and a vehicle of hope—a testament to what’s possible when hearts unite for a higher purpose.
