The Karunya Arogya Suraksha Padhathi (KASP), Kerala’s implementation of the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), is a flagship health insurance scheme aimed at providing free treatment to underprivileged and senior citizens.
Since its inception in 2018, the scheme has benefited over 43.4 lakh people, with expenditures exceeding ₹1,636 crore. KASP covers secondary and tertiary care treatments at both government and private hospitals, with over 744 hospitals (200 government and 544 private) participating in the initiative.
In December 2024, Kerala extended the scheme to provide free treatment for all senior citizens, a major enhancement that underscores its commitment to inclusive healthcare. This move aligns with Kerala’s high health standards, with the government aiming to further bridge healthcare accessibility gaps
KASP has been recognized nationally for its effective utilization, with Kerala winning the “Best Utilization Award” at the Arogya Manthan 2022 organized by the Union Health Ministry. The scheme is lauded for treating an average of three patients every minute, reflecting its extensive reach and efficiency.
Despite its success, the scheme has faced challenges, such as delays in reimbursements to private hospitals, which have threatened their participation. Efforts are ongoing to address these issues to ensure the sustainability of this vital healthcare initiative
