British Indian Anoushka Kale Elected President of Cambridge Union

Anoushka Kale, a British Indian student, has been elected as the president of the Cambridge Union Society for the Easter 2025 term. The Cambridge Union, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious debating societies, has a storied history of promoting free speech and hosting global leaders and thinkers since 1815.

Kale, a 20-year-old studying English Literature at Sidney Sussex College, was elected unopposed with 126 votes. She previously served as the society’s Debates Officer and focused on fostering ties with cultural groups like the university’s India Society. In her presidential manifesto, she emphasized expanding diversity, promoting collaboration with cultural organizations, and enhancing access through reduced ticket costs for events like the summer garden party. She is one of the few South Asian women to hold this distinguished position.

The Cambridge Union’s past presidents include renowned figures such as John Maynard Keynes and Baron Karan Bilimoria. Kale’s leadership aims to continue the Union’s tradition of hosting international speakers while fostering inclusivity and accessibility​
