A Heart-Wrenching Exploration of Reproductive Rights.

An original play, scripted and directed by Saleena Sadasivan for the Sree Narayana Guru
Mission of the U.K. ( SNGM-UK), is set to be featured during the International Women’s Day Celebrations on 9th March 2025. This forthcoming production explores the intricate and sensitive topics of rape and reproductive rights, juxtaposed against the diverse cultural environments of Texas, USA and London, U.K.
The storyline develops amidst substantial changes to Texas’s abortion laws, which have introduced stringent regulations eUectively banning nearly all abortions in the state, particularly following the enactment of a trigger law in 2021 and additional legislation in 2022.

Characters and their journeys:

Cecilia (played by Aparna Souparnika): The resilient protagonist, Cecilia, is an immigrant woman grappling with the trauma of marital rape while navigating the complexities of reproductive rights.
Alya (played by Rittu Sunil): Cecilia’s loyal friend, Alya, provides essential support during Cecilia’s struggles. Together, they actively seek out local and national organizations that can assist Cecilia in her journey. .
Angela (played by Sasikumari Jyothyprakash): Angela, experiences a transformative journey regarding reproductive rights and women’s freedom. As an evangelical Christian, her initial reluctance gives way to a deeper understanding, highlighting her internal conflict and eventual acceptance of another’s viewpoint.
Sebastian Lopez (played by Jibbi Gopalan): An American republican politician serves as an antagonist, embodying the conflicting views on reproductive rights.His character is both confident and vulnerable as he engages in heated debates with Cecilia.
Community Centre Leader (played by Manju Mandirathil): Representing a voice of reason, this character facilitates discussions at the community centre, albeit reluctantly addressing the controversial topic of reproductive rights.
• Dr. Nidhu (played by Rosy Sarasan): A compassionate physician, who is dedicated to supporting both mothers and their babies, embodying the complexities of the medical perspective on reproductive rights.
Jason (played by Keerthy Somarajan): A layered character oUers insights into the abortion debate, contrasting American cultural perspectives with those of the U.K., where abortion rights are less contentious.

• Antony (played by Satheesh Kumar): Representing an older generation, Antony holds traditional values and supports pro-life positions, passionately advocating for policies that align with his conservative beliefs shaped by personal experiences.

The play features dance choreography by Dr. Meera Mahesh, performed alongside Rani Ragulal. Three contemporary dance pieces symbolises both chaos and trauma, visually depicting the struggle between victim and abusers.
The play is enriched by a compelling musical score arranged by Manoj Siva, intertwining with the narrative to elicit profound emotional responses.
